Development in Moral Doctrine: «Pastorum et Fidelium Conspiratio» as a Living Question

The ecclesial momentum we are experiencing in the changing era of technological post-modernity calls for a renewal of moral theology in order to respond to the signs of the times which are truly signs of God. The question of the development of doctrine in matters of faith and morals and, within this, the question of how the faithful (sensus fidelium) are to be actively involved together with pastors and theologians is gaining in importance. From the avenues opened up by the Second Vatican Council we turn to the writings of J. H. Newman, who in the middle of the 19th century, with an impressive proleptic capacity, raised the need to consult the faithful in order to «co-inspire» the truth in history, to find the guidance of the Spirit in faith and life for the people of God. Together with this English theologian, others such as Lonergan, Rahner, Murray, Fries, Congar, Duquoc, Noonan, Whelan or Madrigal, to name the most present here, help to relocate the progress of moral doctrine in this complex synodal time, where Pope Francis urges a theological renewal of openness to experience with his kerygmatic Magisterium, solidly rooted in the living and creative Tradition of the Church.
