The Indwelling of the Spirit Today
Keywords:
Holy Spirit, Paradox, Dwelling, Experience, Poetry.Abstract
When retracing the terminology of the indwelling of the Spirit in some dictionaries of spirituality, one might have the impression that it gradually lost its importance in spiritual life. In contrast, this article argues that the traditional image of the indwelling of the Spirit has not lost any of its weight. Such indwelling is not reserved to an elite, but has value for every Christian. Paradoxical thinking helps us to maintain our so cherished autonomy and freedom – even though it is theonomous. I propose four paradoxes for understanding this mystical experience that connects the Holy Spirit with the precious and polyphonic verb «to dwell». Poetry helps us to understand such dynamism intimately. The indwelling of the Spirit is an experience of passive activity, of sweet dependence, of shadowy certainty, and of immanent transcendence.
