Looking for treasures: tools to help families

Abstract

Family is the main support for human development. Nowadays family value is being re-discovered. At the same time there are many difficulties that affect the ability of the family to bracket and promote each member`s development. The principal aim of this article is to show a brief perspective on family characteristics and to present what we consider the main personal capacities for counseling or family and couple accompaniment. First of all, we expose the most important social factors that have contributed to post-modern family evolution, what leads us to understand the problems that impact on families and couples at this moment. Finally, we reflect on family and couple counselor’s aptitudes, considering that the counselor him/herself is a tool for change.
