Resumen

El carácter étnico del cristianismo primitivo es un tema debatido en la actualidad. La referencia a γένος presente en el comienzo de la Carta a Diogneto es aducida con frecuencia para defender una comprensión racial/étnica de la identidad cristiana. Para algunos autores esta interpretación se apoya en las referencias a la expresión «tercer γένος/genus» que se encuentra en otros escritores cristianos anteriores o contemporáneos a Diogn. El presente trabajo aboga por una interpretación no étnica del término, analizando el significado de γένος en combinación con ἐπιτήδευμα, la palabra que le sigue unida por ἢ. Mediante ejemplos tomados de la literatura griega clásica y cristiana, se sostiene que con τοῦτο γένος ἢ ἐπιτήδευμα el autor de la carta se está refiriendo principalmente al modo de vida de los cristianos en la sociedad en que habitan sin connotaciones étnicas.
