Drawing on the conclusions of the Royaumont Colloquium, organised by the Club of Rome at the request of UNESCO in 1986, this article reflects on the role of ethical values in education in the face of a changing and uncertain world, characterised by global challenges and scientific and technological advances. It examines how education for the 21st century should be understood, identifies emerging universal values – such as respect for cultural diversity and the protection of the environment – and proposes measures to foster international debate.
