Abstract

In this paper we analyze the recent immigration inflows to the United Kingdom, its effects on the population ageing process and its projected effect on the pension system. The British case is especially relevant for its similarities with the Spanish case: both countries are net receptors of foreign population and in both cases the public pension system is of the PAYG (pay as you go) type, which is highly vulnerable to the ageing process. Net immigration in recent years has been a brake to the increasing (old age) dependency rate, but it does not ensure long term sustainability for the current pension system, which is now under revision
