Christian Theological Anthropology and the Challenge of Artificial Intelligence

We present an analysis of the impact we forsee artificial intelligence (AI) will have on human beings, structured in two different scenarios: (1) The emergence of the digital being (including digital clones) and its extrapolation into robotics; and (2) The trajectory of transhumanism and its potential culmination in posthumanism. Within the framework of what many already call «techno-theology», we engage three central questions: (a) Might the digital being and its clones be considered an object of salvation? (b) Are we approaching the end of human dominion upon the earth? and (c) Could posthumans be recipients of divine salvation? These considerations culminate in two final interrogatives: (a) Do we wish for the human being to remain the apex of biological evolution and divine creation? And (b) How might we regulate AI so that it does not come to regulate us?
