Descendants of Moroccan Migrants in Spain: The Emergence of a Diaspora: The Case of the Community of Madrid

This article analyzes processes of identity construction among descendants of Moroccan migrants in Spain. Based on a qualitative methodology and 17 interviews conducted in the Community of Madrid, the study examines the articulation of a postmigrant “Moroccanness” as an identity category mobilized by these individuals. The findings show that this Moroccanness is shaped across multiple sites of socialization—family, community, Spanish society, and the parents’ country of origin—giving rise to distinct forms of collective identification. The article argues that descendants of Moroccan migrants in Spain are participating in the emergence of a diaspora, understood as a shared subjectivity symbolically oriented toward Morocco and socially situated in Spain. This research provides significant empirical and conceptual insights into the study of migration, identity, and diasporas in the contemporary European context.
