Las personas consagradas parecían estar presentes de forma constante en la vida de las Iglesias particulares y, sin embargo, constituían una minoría muy reducida. Popularmente eran conocidas como «religiosas», «religiosos», «monjas», «frailes», «hermanas», «hermanos», «padres» e incluso «madres». En el ámbito canónico recibían la denominación de «consagrados» y «consagradas», categoría que incluía también a los miembros de las sociedades de vida apostólica y de los institutos seculares.
