Este ensayo planteaba el estudio de dos concepciones diferentes de entender el devenir temporal. Una, de carácter cíclico, correspondía a las culturas de mentalidad arcaica o tradicional; la otra, lineal, pertenecía a los pueblos de concepción histórica. Asimismo, explicaba cómo, a partir de la perspectiva lineal del tiempo y de la historia, se configuraba la noción de progreso.
