La península ibérica se había caracterizado desde la Antigüedad por la diversidad de pueblos y lenguas, tal como ya señalaba Estrabón en época de Augusto. Junto a esta pluralidad lingüística, las distintas variedades del latín vulgar introducidas por los romanos evolucionaron de forma diversa a lo largo del tiempo. Aunque los procesos históricos incrementaron en algunos casos las diferencias lingüísticas, también favorecieron la formación de lenguas comunes y tendencias hacia la unidad, integrando diversas modalidades dialectales en ámbitos lingüísticos más amplios.
