La revolución copernicana no solo constituyó un acontecimiento científico de primera magnitud, inseparable del nacimiento de la cultura moderna, sino que también tuvo amplias implicaciones filosóficas. Sirvió como referente simbólico para la autocomprensión del hombre moderno. Tanto para destacar su orgullo ingenuo como para subrayar su innegable grandeza, se recurrió con frecuencia al carácter simbólico de la revolución iniciada por Copérnico y a su capacidad para iluminar el sentido de la condición humana.
