Se ofrece una retrospectiva del panorama cultural español durante la década decisiva de los años cincuenta. El autor, especialista en literatura contemporánea, sitúa su análisis crítico en el contexto general de la época y repasa las principales corrientes literarias de Europa y América para centrarse, sobre todo, en el caso español. Revistas, novela y teatro son examinados desde una perspectiva distanciada de la cultura oficial dominante entonces.
