La realidad del sida se impuso con fuerza y las estadísticas comenzaron a resultar alarmantes. El síndrome había adquirido carta de naturaleza en numerosos países, mientras la comunidad científica buscaba fórmulas para detener su avance. Los trabajos de Gallo y de Montagnier, junto con los de sus respectivos equipos, no habían ido más allá de constatar la impotencia ante un retrovirus que escapaba a todas sus tentativas de control y manipulación.
