Entre 1989 y 1991 se derrumbó en Europa central y oriental una forma de socialismo que se autodenominaba «socialismo real». Este modelo, promovido por los partidos comunistas de la región y respaldado durante un tiempo por los de Europa occidental, se caracterizaba, en el plano político, por el monopolio institucional del partido comunista, cuyo papel dirigente en la sociedad y en el Estado estaba garantizado por la constitución al margen del consenso popular.
