La política latinoamericana estuvo caracterizada, en términos generales, hasta la década de 1960 por una notable inestabilidad en las formas de gobierno. Sobre el trasfondo constitucional heredado del liberalismo decimonónico, la tradicional preponderancia presidencialista se combinó con el frecuente recurso a medidas de fuerza que alteraban el normal desarrollo institucional. Esta situación dio lugar a diversas experiencias políticas en las que coexistieron mecanismos constitucionales y prácticas de carácter autoritario. Se analiza la situación política en América Latina entre 1960 y la década de 1980, haciendo énfasis en el autoritarismo y las dictaduras que asolaron la región.
