La actitud de la Iglesia ante el descubrimiento de América experimentó una notable evolución entre el IV Centenario (1892) y el V Centenario (1992). Mientras que a finales del siglo XIX la figura de Cristóbal Colón fue presentada en ámbitos eclesiales de manera abiertamente positiva, como instrumento providencial de la expansión de la Iglesia y la evangelización, un siglo después surgieron valoraciones mucho más críticas sobre su actuación y sus consecuencias históricas.
