La reunión celebrada en Roma en junio de 1990 reunió al Papa, a los presidentes de las Conferencias Episcopales europeas y a varios obispos de países excomunistas con el objetivo de favorecer el conocimiento mutuo entre las dos ramas de la Iglesia europea, separadas durante décadas por la división política del continente. El encuentro promovió el intercambio de experiencias y la definición de un proyecto común orientado a la nueva evangelización de Europa.
