Migrant Topology and Savings Strategies in Commodity Cities: A Case Study of the Mining City of Antofagasta

Studies on migration and money have focused on understanding the impact and dynamics of remittances in the places and families of origin. However, there is a gap in the understanding of the monetary strategies of migrants in host contexts. From the intersection of literature on migration, money flows, and topology, this paper asks how the monetary strategies of migrants configure an unequal appropriation of space in mining cities. From a case study of a Chilean extractive territory and the application of in-depth interviews, three types of migrants are identified according to their monetary strategies and relationships with space: migrants categorized as cross-border, expectant, and consolidated. From the monetary strategies of migrants, a pattern of spatial appropriation emerges, a sort of migrant topology that behaves as a Moebious stripe with the mining city in a dynamic of friction, continuity, and inequality.
