Anthropo-centrism vs. Eco-centrism?

Abstract

In anthropology, the debate between Anthropocentrism and Ecocentrism is emerging strongly. Is it just a fashion or a new frontier of thought? Not all the criticisms of classical humanism pursued the same objective, for while some were oriented towards a better understanding of the human, others pursued rather the dissolution of the human within other horizons of reference. We are not interested here in the old dispute between humanism and anti-humanism, in a broad sense, but rather in the criticisms of anthropocentric humanism made from the new ecological thought. Since the emergence of the evolutionary paradigm, the pretensions of humans to feel that we are the center of the universe, without being part of its nature, have been dissolved, forcing us to overcome our narcissism and to accept that we are just one more species in the context of the many that make up the world of life.
